Club's Top Dances

This list is compiled from a combination of requests, dance floor enthusiasm and the number of people who actually do the dance and is a month 'in arrears' to reflect what we've actually been dancing to and not what we intend dancing.
Each of the top ten gets a few words of critique by yours truly.

Tulsa Shuffle's Current Top 10 Dances

1. Crazy Foot Mambo - If You Wanna Be Happy by Dr. Victor & The Rasta Rebels
A 32 count, 2 wall, beginner/intermediate line dance from Paul McAdam. Excellent fun tract from Dr. Victor & co track, good (infectious) fun dance. Floor filler. Recommended. (step sheet)
2. My New Life - High Class Lady by The Lennerockers
Straight in at number 2 in our charts, this dance is easy to do and to teach - regularly gets multiple requests. Excellent dance - fits the music really well. (step sheet)
3. Nimby - Your Back Yard by Burton Cummings
Very good dance from Maggie Gallagher coupled with a good solid country track from Burton Cummings. Not someone I'd heard of before. Fits the music well - good dance. Recommended. (step sheet)
4. Sea Salt Sally - Sea Salt Ssally by Rick Guard
96 count, 4 wall, intermediate line dance from Kate Sala (due to the numerous holds we taught it in 48 counts). Fits the music very well & always fills the floor. Highly recommended. (step sheet)
5. Rebel Amor - Rebel de Amor by Belle Perez
Without doubt one of the nicest tracks around at the moment - lovely relaxed 64 count 4 wall dance from Roy Verdonk & Wil Bos. I hope this one stays around for a long time. Highly recommended. (step sheet)
6. Mercy - Mercy by Duffy
Excellent dance taught to us by Kate Sala during her recent workshop with the club. Fills the floor. Recommended. (step sheet)
7. Ride The River - Ride The River by JJ Cale & Eric Clapton
Excellent dance to a fine track from their collaborative album 'Road To Escondido'. Still maintaining its popularity. Fills the floor. (step sheet)
8. Grace Kelly - Grace Kelly by Mika
Considering this is a pop track it's a good dance from Pat & Lizzie Stott which is proving to be very resilient. Still heavily populates the floor. Recommended. (step sheet)
9. Lemon Tree - Lemon Tree by Fool's Garden
Straightforward by first class dance from Kim Ray (who's doing a workshop at the club on October 11). Floor filler. Highly recommended. (step sheet)
10. In God's Hands - In God's Hands by Nelly Furtado
Beautiful waltz from Francien Sittrop to a lovely track from Nelly Furtadop. A little twisty/turney for some, but outstanding choreography nonetheless. Potential floor filler. Highly recommended. (step sheet)

Goldun The Goldun Oldun Cowpoke Olduns

Every week we'll try and find time to resurrect and re-enjoy an old but once popular dance on the good principle that newer dancers may never have learned them while some of the more experienced dancers may have forgotten them. Sometimes we'll also use some different music just to freshen the dance a little bit and get people 'out of their musical rut'.

1. Lamtarra Rumba
I saw this in one of my Line Dancing magazines as being popular with a club in Newbury, Berkshire. Why not revive it I thought. I taught it to the beginners and played it at the 'after eights' session. I taught it to some relatively slow tracks and ended up with Coco Jamboo by Mr. President. Not Country, I know, but it's a happy track and chugs along at a good fun speed. It passed the 'grin test' and went down exceptionally well (step sheet)
2. T-Bone Shuffle
No particular reasoning behind this one other than it's popular, it's been around a long time and I like the music (Sunchyme by Dario G). Old - yes. Floor filler - still. Sometimes split the floor with Black Coffee and/or T & Coffee. Bit of fun on Party Nights. (step sheet)
3. Silk & Satin
Lovely elegant dance to a brilliant piece of music (Island by Eddie Raven). This was a request (for review) from the floor which went down extremely well with all those who'd not met it before (step sheet)
4. God Blessed Texas
What can you say about this one - it certainly raised the grin factor, especially among those who'd never danced it before! (step sheet)
5. Love Letters
This was revived purely because a club member requested it. What better reason is there? - anyway, lovely dance to a beautiful track from Deana Carter (step sheet)
6. Addicted To Love
Nice little dance revived as a beginner dance and 'infiltrated' into the after eight session (I prefer the Robert Palmer version, the dancers preferred Kimber Clayton, so Kimber it is....) (step sheet)
7. Rock Around The Clock
This one's getting on a bit now, but I saw it in October's Linedancer magazine and thought, why not? I taught it to the beginners to 'Angel' by Shaggy as it was relatively slow and had a well defined beat. later, we did it during the after 8's session - ah, nostalgia, not what it used to be eh? - the dance went down well though (step sheet)
8. Red Hot Salsa
This dance, choreographed by Christina Brown has most definitely stood the test of time. One or two people may groan and say "oh no, not Red Hot Salsa", but everyone gets up and does it with a smile on their faces. Good floor filler resurrected for the beginners class (step sheet)
9. Cruisin'
Another classic by the Beach Boys - nice little dance by Neil Hale which was resurrected for the beginners but is also welcomed by the after eights (step sheet)
10. It's My World
This one doesn't seem quite old enough to be 'resurrected', but Brenda asked for us to go over it, 'nuff said', so here it is.... (step sheet)
11. Just For Grins
This ones been around longer than Willie Nelson and a number of our members had never learned it so, in order to rectify the matter, we taught it for the beginner session and went over it again for the after eights - three different tracks for the same dance during the same evening. (step sheet)
12. Scotia Samba
What can I say but that it seems like a lifetime ago that Scotia Samba was a regular dance. Anyway, a fair proportion of members had never danced it before, so we did it. A good fun dance to a great Mavericks track. (step sheet)
13. Cinco de Mayo
Well, it only seems a short time ago that we learned this for the first time and now it's an 'oldie' - how time flies when you're dancing ..... It's got a new lease of life by using "The Best years Of Our Life" by The Baha Men (from the soundtrack of the film Shrek). (step sheet)
14. Peace Train
We did this one as a late request and, while no-one actually got it wrong, there were an awful lot of 'variations' out there, so we reprised it. Ah, nostalgia, it's not what it used to be!!(step sheet)
15. Venga Bus Shuffle
This was requested on the last Monday prior to our Christmas Party Night - "Can we have a wall first please?" - could I remember it, not on your life - good job I had a step sheet with me (just like Blue Peter - 'One I prepared Earlier'!!) (step sheet)
16. Outta Here
I was shopping with Wendy (S.W.M.B.O) and the shop we were in was playing the old Cher song 'Believe'. That rang bells as we used to do the dance 'Outta Here' to it. So we featured it at the next club night as a Blast From The Past. Hard to believe it's now well over 8 years old. (step sheet)
17. Shipwrecked
Can't really remember why, but this one came to mind whilst leafing through my play list. We hadn't done it for so long that a lot of our newer dancers had never learned it. I taught it to 'Sex On The Beach' by T-Spoon and it went down very well. There's life in these olduns yet!!! (step sheet)
18. Drowsy Maggie
After browsing through the club playlist one night, one of our dancers requested Drowsy Maggie "Coz we've forgotten it!!!". After a quick refresh, it's now attracting requests again. Good little dance, although I'd forgotten just how long the track is ...... (step sheet)
19. Cripple Creek
Had a thought the other day (make a note in your diaries!!!) that we hadn't ever done Cripple Creek at the club. Rectified. Proved to be a lorra lorra fun (sorry Cilla). (step sheet)
20. What's Your Name
No real reasoning behind this apart from the fact that it's a good fun dance that we've not done for some time now, and there's a new (or newish) generation of dancers out there who've never learned it. (step sheet)
21. Backtrack
We're just moving to and merging with the Ambleside Club, and it's one that they've been doing, and that we don't - so we're rectifying it ... (step sheet)
22. Crazy Little Thing
Just a random request one night asking for a 'refresher' - so we did - we used the Queen track instead of Dwight as it's a tad slower. (step sheet)
23. Ridin'
I've no idea at all why we redid this oldie. I guess it seemed a good idea at the time as a lot of our newer dancers had never had the pleasure of Ridin' before !!! (step sheet)
24. Funky Cha Cha
Chatting to one of our club dancers one night, I said I was thinking of bringing this one back and was greeted by not too muted howls of delight - seems a popular oldie !!! So we did it again. (step sheet)
25. Streamlinin'
Requested on Wednesday night along with the classic quote "I think I remember it, it's got some Whooo's in it!!" - anyway, popped it on and we had quite a few who did actually remember it (including the "Whoo's") - good fun - good request. (step sheet)
26. Silk & Satin
Requested by one of our daytime classes with the comment "I remember doing it once, and it was lovely" we revived it and enjoyed it once more - lovely dance, even lovelier music from Eddie Raven. (step sheet)
27. Down Under
The Bellamy Brothers' track Kookaburra Blues was requested as the music for Jazzy Joe's and we decided to revisit the original dance to that track. Doesn't phrase, but a nice little 48 counter nonetheless. (step sheet)
28. Deck 51
Good track. Good dance. Not been done at our club for some time now so we rectified the omission. (step sheet)
29. Cool Me Down
Great track from Jenaí - a tad fast for some, but most enjoy it. (step sheet)
30. Love Letters
Must surely come under the general heading of 'Classic Waltz'. Smooth dance and lovely music too. (step sheet)
31. Under Your Spell
Another waltz, albeit a slightly more recent one. Starts as a 2 wall facing front & back and finishes as a 2-wall facing left to right. Good dance to a powerful track by Ana Victoria. (step sheet)
32. Addicted To Love
Brought back as an improver dance, picked up by the 'after 8' dancers. Jury's out on whether to play Kimber Clayton or Robert Palmer. No contest as far as I'm concerned, Robert Palmer wins (almost!!) every time. (step sheet)
33. Green Door
Went to see the show 'That'll Be The Day' at the Cliffs Pavilion which featured the song 'Green Door'. Didn't we used to do a dance to that? (step sheet)
34. Mack The Knife
Excellent dance to a good Brain Setzer (ex Stray Cats) track. Enjoyed this one (step sheet)
35. Monterey Mama
'Request from the blue' one night - good job I had a step sheet with me. Did it and it's now a regular request. Nice to have it back as it gives us a chance to cool down a bit (step sheet)
36. Chill Factor
Seemed that there was a complete generation of dancers at our club who've never been taught Chill Factor. Rectified. (step sheet)
37. Rumba Ride
Re-taught this one on a complete whim 'cos I like the music and it's a nice pleasant little dance. (step sheet)
38. Mucara Walk
Taught this as a the more advanced 'beginner' dance. Our early after 8's picked up on it and it's now back on the request list. Quite right too! (step sheet)
39. Walking Backwards
Requested one night along with the plea 'Can we have a quick wall' - so we did it (step sheet)
40. Cheek To Cheek
Part of our 'oldies revival crusade' - not done it for ages and we'd all forgotten it. Nice little dance from Rob Fowler. (step sheet)
41. Poor Boy Shuffle
Still on our 'oldies revival crusade' - Suggested by Wendy (I think). Nice dance. Filled the floor, say no more. (step sheet)
42. Where We've Been
Taught this one ages ago but wherever you go they still play (and dance) it. Had to do it again. (step sheet)
43. Wanna Be Me
Went to see Tina (The Common Girls) and she played this. We'd forgotten all about it, but loved doing it again. Brought it back to delight the club with !!! (step sheet)
